What is sound masking?

Sound masking adds a carefully engineered, low-level background sound to a space so that speech becomes unintelligible a short distance from the speaker.

The problem it solves

Speech privacy is not about volume, it is about intelligibility. In a very quiet open-plan office, a conversation two desks away is perfectly understandable — and therefore both distracting and non-private. The room is quiet, and that is precisely the problem.

How masking works?

A masking system distributes a continuous, broadband sound at a controlled level and spectrum, usually through loudspeakers above the ceiling. Because it is uniform and featureless, the ear stops attending to it within minutes. Speech arriving from a distance falls below the threshold at which the brain can reconstruct words, so it registers as indistinct sound rather than as a conversation.

It is not white noise from a speaker

The distinction that matters is engineering. The spectrum has to be shaped, the level has to be set correctly for the space and its use, and coverage has to be uniform — an audible change in level as someone walks across the floor is far more noticeable than the masking itself. Getting these wrong produces a system people ask to have switched off.

Where it fits?

Masking is well suited to open-plan offices, consultation and clinical areas, HR and legal floors, and waiting areas adjacent to private rooms. It is not a substitute for a partition where confidential conversations must be genuinely contained.

Soundmask

Novico supplies and engineers Soundmask systems in Malaysia. Our involvement starts with assessment of the space rather than the product: we establish the existing background level and the privacy requirement, then design coverage, spectrum and levels around them and commission the system by measurement.

Choosing between masking and treatment

If the complaint is that the room echoes, the answer is absorption. If the complaint is that you can hear every word from across the floor, masking is likely the right tool. Measuring first tells you which situation you are in.
