What is an acoustic performance audit?
A structured measurement and assessment exercise that replaces opinions about a space with data, then turns that data into engineering recommendations.
The purpose
An audit exists to answer a specific question: does this space perform well enough for the way it is used? That question cannot be answered by walking through the room. It requires measurement against defined criteria.
What gets measured?
Three quantities cover most situations. Airborne sound insulation describes how much sound is lost travelling between two spaces. Reverberation time describes how long sound persists within a room. Background noise level describes the ambient condition against which everything else is heard.
These interact. A meeting room with a good partition can still lack privacy if the receiving room is extremely quiet, because there is nothing to cover the speech that does get through.
Standards
For field sound insulation we work to ISO 16283-1. For reverberation time in ordinary rooms we work to ISO 3382-2. Background noise levels are assessed against the criterion agreed for the project, since the appropriate target depends on how the space is used.
Conditions matter
Most insulation and reverberation measurements need the space quiet and free of activity, because occupant noise contaminates the result. That often means testing outside working hours. Access and occupancy usually drive the schedule far more than the measurement time itself.
What the report should contain?
A useful audit report sets out the method and measurement positions, the measured results, a comparison against the agreed criteria, a pass or fail evaluation where applicable, and — most importantly — engineering recommendations that follow from the findings rather than from habit.
Better still: audit at design stage
Reviewing partition build-ups, service penetrations and room finishes during design is considerably cheaper than remediating them after handover. An audit after completion tells you what went wrong; a design review helps prevent it.
